A new year, a new batch of classical recordings: there’s the Vienna Philharmonic‘s New Year’s Day concert, fresh off the presses, full of good cheer, and always a favorite. There were several operas that we reviewed last month, with most being new or rarely heard. The latter include Rossini‘s Matilde di Shabran; an opera bouffe by Offenbach, Maître Péronilla; and Norman Dello Joio‘s opera about Joan of Arc, written for television. Joseph C. Phillips, Jr. has written a monopera, The Grey Land, addressing the theme of racism in America, while Carlisle Floyd, now in his nineties, writes about gender identity in Prince of Players.
